Your curly hair questions, answered

Everything you need to know before booking, and everything you've been Googling at midnight.

What is a rëzo cut and how is it different from a regular haircut?

A rëzo cut is performed on dry hair, curl by curl, so your stylist can see exactly how each section naturally falls. Unlike a standard wet cut, where curls are stretched and unpredictable,  a dry cut respects your natural curl pattern and removes weight where it's actually needed. The result is a shape that works with your curls, not against them.

How do I prepare for my first curly hair appointment?

Come with your hair washed and styled as you normally would at home — this helps us see your natural curl pattern and how your curls behave day-to-day. Avoid straightening or blow-drying before your visit. If you have any photos of haircuts you love (or hate!), bring those along too.

Why does my curly hair go flat after washing?

Flat curls after washing are usually caused by product build-up weighing the hair down, insufficient moisture, or applying products to soaking wet hair rather than damp hair. The technique matters as much as the products — how you apply, scrunch, and dry makes a huge difference to final volume and definition.

How often should I wash my curly hair?

Most curly hair types do best with 1–2 washes per week. Washing too frequently strips the natural oils your curls need to stay hydrated and defined. On non-wash days, a day-after spray or light water refresh can revive your curls without starting from scratch.

What is the Curly Girl Method and does it work in Australia?

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) is a hair care approach that avoids sulphates, silicones and heat styling, focusing on co-washing, deep conditioning and gentle handling. It absolutely works in Australia — but product selection matters here. Many overseas CGM favourites contain ingredients that perform differently in Australian humidity, so local recommendations are important.

What's the difference between wavy, curly and coily hair?

Wavy hair (type 2) has an S-shaped pattern that tends to fall flat at the roots. Curly hair (type 3) forms defined spirals or ringlets. Coily hair (type 4) has a tight, spring-like pattern and is the most fragile type due to its shape. All three need specialist care — but the techniques and products that work for each are quite different.

What products work best for curly hair in Australian humidity?

In Perth's climate, you want products that provide moisture without being too heavy, and hold without making hair crunchy. We recommend the Seeds Curly Hair range — developed specifically with Australian conditions in mind. A light leave-in, a curl-defining gel and a finishing oil is usually the perfect combination for most curl types here.

How do I transition to wearing my hair naturally curly?

Transitioning means growing out chemically treated or heat-damaged hair while caring for your natural curl pattern. The process takes patience — most clients transition gradually over 6–12 months with regular trims to remove damage. Marli has been through this journey personally and can guide you through every stage with a plan that suits your hair and lifestyle.

How do I find the right curly hair specialist in Perth?

Look for a stylist who specialises exclusively in curly, wavy and coily hair — not one who occasionally sees curly clients. Check that they cut dry, offer curl-specific treatments, and have a portfolio of real client results across different curl types. Ask about their training and whether they have personal experience with curly hair themselves. If the answer to most of those is yes, you're in the right place.
